Have you tried turning it off and on again?
When it comes to computer problems, I’m sure you’ve all heard the old phrase, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” You may roll your eyes, but it DOES work – and here’s why.
How Computers Work
Computers are basically just a set of written instructions on how to carry out specific tasks, and these instructions can sometimes go awry. When one of these processes fails or has an error, that can affect other processes, which then have their own failures or errors. All of these errors can bog your system down, until finally it starts to affect something you’re using daily or need in that moment. This is when a restart is necessary – it gives your computer the opportunity to start fresh and it gives you the opportunity to do the task you need to do without being annoyed by errors.

Windows 10 Users
If you’re using Windows 10 (and you’ve been keeping up with your updates), Microsoft recently rolled out a feature that you should be aware of. Instead of turning it off and on again, you should choose restart from the power menu. Using the restart option (rather than powering off and then powering back on) will ensure any errors are cleared out.
The reason for this? Microsoft thought they’d be helpful by making it appear as if your computer was booting up faster. When you choose power off, Windows 10 will now write your current settings to the hard drive so that you can pick up from where you left off quickly, once you boot up again. This unfortunately doesn’t clear out all the errors, which is why it’s necessary to choose restart instead.
For best results, be sure to choose restart from the power menu, rather than shut down. Also, this method works for pretty much all technology, not just PCs! Try it with your phone, tablet, or even your television. – Vinnie Sanchez, PCS Computer Technician
